Opened a bottle, smelt it once, decided it wasn’t for me, moved on — the five-minute mistake nearly everyone makes with fragrance.
I’ve done it myself. Opened a bottle, smelt it once, decided it wasn’t for me, moved on. I couldn’t of been more wrong!
Last month I almost binned a batch. Smelt sharp, a bit off, nothing like what I was aiming for. I left it on my wrist and forgot about it. An hour later, I caught it again on the way to the kettle and stopped. It had become the thing I’d been chasing for weeks. Same oil. Different fragrance entirely.
Here’s what’s actually happening in those first five minutes: you’re smelling the lightest, most volatile parts of the oil flashing off. It’s the loudest, sharpest, least representative version of the scent. It’s the trailer, not the film.
Oud especially needs an hour. The resin needs your body heat to wake up. It needs to mix with your skin. It needs time to settle into whatever it’s going to be on you, which is different from what it is on me, which is different from what it is on the strip.
So here’s the rule. Apply it. Walk off. Make a coffee, do an hour of whatever you do, then come back to your wrist.
