I wanted to tell you how things turned out with that little bottle.
I found it at the back of a drawer while helping Mum clear out the spare room: no label, one drop left. When I asked her what it was, she opened it, breathed in, and sat down on the edge of the bed. Then she cried.
It was Dad's, the scent she used to catch every time he hugged her goodbye. She hadn't smelled it in years.
So I brought it to you, and you were honest with me from the start: you couldn't make it the same, only something close. You never even used the drop, which meant more than you know.
Three months later, I gave Mum the new bottle. She put a little on her wrist and held it to her face for a long time. When I asked if it smelled like him, she thought for a moment.
“Not quite,” she said. “But it feels like one of his hugs.”
